All over the world, gamers keep on gaming at ever-higher volumes.
In 2018, 2.3 billion people worldwide—nearly 30% of the Earth’s population—contributed to the gaming population. And in the process, they spent $137.9 billion.
Where are the gamers?
One of the world’s fastest-growing gaming markets is Latin America. The region grew 13.5% YoY in 2018 and is slated to grow by another 50% over the coming 3 years, with Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina leading the charge. The market is experiencing growth across all segments (PC, console, and mobile) with a particular rise in mobile gaming as smartphone adoption grows. The region now boasts 234 million gamers and is becoming a veritable global force. Mexico and Brazil, for example, have more gamers than either the UK or Germany.
And Latin American gamers aren’t just playing games developed by companies in other parts of the world. Increasingly, they’re playing games developed directly in-region. We recently met with Brazil Games representatives at GDC and were interested to hear that Brazil now has 375 digital games developers, who produced 1718 games in 2017. That's a staggering 28% growth YoY.
